“But how do you treat trauma within a DBT framework?” is a question that we are getting increasingly. We can give clear and scientifically substantiated answers to this!
Melanie Harned, PhD (University of Washington, Seattle) developed the ‘DBT Prolonged Exposure Protocol’, which explains how to link PTSD-oriented exposure techniques in DBT.
Dialexis managed to organize a 5-day online training from 2 to 6 October 2023 with Melanie and Lorie Ritschel, PhD, all DBT teams and therapists are very welcome!
The training is based on the book “Treating Trauma in Dialectical Behavior Therapy”. This work has not yet been translated into Dutch. Good English language skills are therefore required for an optimal training experience.
This 5-day training is aimed at learning to integrate trauma treatment within the standard DBT program. The DBT PE protocol is designed to allow PTSD treatment in people with suicidal and self-damaging behavior, and other co-morbid problems. The protocol is one of the latest developments in DBT research and treatment and can be added to the standard DBT to offer integrated treatment of PTSD, suicidal and self-damaging behavior, and other co-morbid problems.
You will learn how to apply the DBT Prolongued Exposure in this training. More specifically, you will learn how to determine whether clients are willing to initiate formal PTSD treatment and which DBT strategies you can use to prepare clients with high suicide risk and co-morbid problems for the DBT PE protocol. The structure and procedures of the DBT PE protocol will be taught in a session-per-session format with extensive possibilities to view and practice video samples. Particular attention will be paid to discussing strategies for overcoming common problems encountered during PTSD treatment with high-risk suicidal clients and co-morbid issues, and the question of how the treatment can be tailored to the complex characteristics of this client population.
Training objectives
You can identify DBT strategies that you can use to prepare clients with high suicide risks and co-morbid problems for the DBT PE protocol.
You can estimate whether clients are ready for formal PTSD treatment.
You understand and can describe the rational use of in vivo and imaginary exposure to treat PTSD.
You can implement the core procedures of the DBT PE protocol (i.e. in vivo and imaginary exposure and processing).
You can identify strategies for addressing common issues that occur during the DBT PE protocol.
