Training to apply the manual for the DBT skills training.
Linehan’s manual for the skills training Dialectical Behavior Therapy is a book of 580 pages with discussed skills (as well as the research results on which they are based), and in which a course in behavior therapy is given. Furthermore, validation is discussed and protocols are provided that help with nightmares and countering drug abuse. The book contains a multiplicity of formats providing the possibility to differentiate in the presenting of extra skills per module, adapted to what each client needs. The skills training is of crucial importance in the DBT program because it connects to the individual therapy.
This manual asks of the skills trainers for:
- know-how in the teaching of the skills,
- the ability to integrate knowledge of the problems of the individual client in the training,
- the ability to motivate clients to practice the skills, and
- management of the dialectical attitude in a skills group.
This is not an easy task. Hence, Pearson and Dialexis have decided to organize a 3-day training in which participants are trained to give the skills training. Not only will the question ‘how to use the book’ be a theme. Integration of the problems of clients and dealing with the group are explicitly part of the program.
