A certified DBT skills trainer is able to give together with a co-trainer the skills training in a DBT programme. A skills trainer is able to take care of these training programmes for diverse patient populations with mainly borderline problems. A skills trainer is also able to guide a co-trainer in executing his/her role and therefore has didactic and substantive qualities.
At least two years of work experience in the mental health care system, experience with working with borderline problems, or problems of a comparable severity, and with working in groups within a mental health care setting. Furthermore he/she has to have successfully completed an education to become psychiatric nurse or a comparable education.
- Intensive training and supplementary course ‘train the trainer‘.
- Give the entire DBT skills training together with an experienced (head) trainer
- Get a positive assessment of a teacher of DBT skills trainers by means of a competence-oriented checklist and three video recordings of a training session in which the aspiring trainer shows to be able to discuss the homework and theory during the skills training. The videos should be accompanied by a verbatim report. The assessment is complete when the aspiring trainer scores sufficiently for every part.
